Up until the day my surgery was complete, I firmly believed that the procedure was a “cure” for ulcerative colitis. I believed this even though people told me otherwise and I read blogs that stated the opposite. I truly thought that once the last stage of my surgery was over, my life would return to normal — as if I’d never been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at all.
This was an entirely new way of digesting food; my body was set up completely different than it had been before the surgery.Your surgeon and surgical care team will tell you that it takes up to one year to fully recover; they are correct. Typically, however, people who have the three-step surgery series start feeling somewhat normal after four or five months post-op. That didn’t happen for me. At the time, I was bleeding again and still had urgency to use the restroom.
